Penguins and “The Penguin” Costumes

Two great costume ideas for any holiday or party are either a penguin costume or the evil “Penguin” costume from the Batman universe. Kids young and old, have been always been fascinated with penguins in general, but ever since issue 58 of the Batman comics was printed, they’ve been fascinated by “the Penguin” in particular.

These special little birds, that live in the coldest regions of the earth are pretty interesting creatures. Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot who is also known as “The Penguin” is an arch enemy to Batman, and is just as interesting in his own way.

Penguins and “The Penguin”

Penguins are birds who are no longer able to fly, but are great swimmers and divers instead. Their wings have morphed into flippers and their torpedo-shapes body allows them to swim under water at high speeds. This also causes them to waddle on land.

The Penguin is known for being a high class citizen who loves high tech weaponry. The Penguin is often portrayed as a small, round and fat man dressed in a tuxedo and waddles around as a modern day gentleman of crime.

Penguin Parents

Real baby penguins have two devoted parents. Unlike many other species, especially other birds, the fathers are very involved in the process of hatching the egg and taking care of the baby penguins. Mom and Dad will take turns warming the egg and searching for food.

The criminal Penguin was abandoned early in life and was constantly bullied because he was born with a serious mutation. Early issues of Batman comics have him born with webbed feet and hands which create a flipper effect, hence the reason why he got the nickname “The Penguin”. The character is rejected by his family because of his odd looks and this is what leads him to the life of crime.

The Social Penguin (or not)

Penguins are very social and when it gets very cold they will huddle together to help incubate their eggs. Penguins also use a sign language of sorts to communicate with each other. They will wave their flippers and move their heads to “talk” to other penguins in the group.

Unlike other Batman villains, The Penguin is a totally anti-social and completely isolated from human society.  He likes to think he’s in complete control of his actions at all times, and, unlike other Batman villains, he is a master criminal by choice. This makes him a real threat to Batman and I think this is what makes the character so special
